New to making concrete ornaments

Postby mel on Mon Mar 30, 2009 5:22 pm

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a few answers, I'm a mum of two and in the past worked with concrete/cement, from building brick gardens to laying tiles, just recently I gave it up..and now Ive been experimenting with concrete moulds and so far I love it and things are going good but...I want to know how do I get the coloured oxide to stay in the grooves of the piece ? I understand I need to use white cement for the colour to work, Im thinking when my cement is mixed to the right consistancy and then add the oxide ,giving it a slight whirl but dont completely mix it ..... also how many mls do you add to your basic sand mix? ....if anyone can help that would be appreciated....thanks guys...

Antiquing concrete

Postby aldaxmoulds on Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:33 am

Hi,
You can use either grey or white concrete and if you are after the antiquing effect of having iron oxide in the grooves of the finished piece you can apply a wash of oxide and water all over the finished piece after it is dry to get the effect you require. After applying the wash wipe it off all the high spots of the piece thus leaving the colour in the crevaces. Let me know if this is not the effect you require. All the best Stan
