plaster and hydrostone

Postby septembre on Fri May 22, 2009 12:06 pm

Hi there

can i mix hydrostone together with pottery plaster for moulding purpose?

Also can hydrostone be mixed by hand or do you need an electric mixer?

A part from hydrostone what would be a stronger plaster , i made some mouldings (bird, swallow) but the end part tend to break!!!!

Thank you

re stone plasters

Postby aldaxmoulds on Mon May 25, 2009 12:12 pm

Hi,
Use Boral Casting Plaster not pottery plaster for casting. Pottery plaster is designed for,its absorbency for ceramic mould making. Casting plaster is designed to give a harder surface suitable for painting. It can be mixed with stone gypsum plasters such as Hydrostone to give a much harder item and to cut the cost of Hydrostone which is not inexpensive coming form the US. About 1 part Hydrostone and 2 parts Casting plaster works quite well. Keep experimenting.Stan
