self skinning Foam prop ?

Postby ozzycriss on Sat May 23, 2009 4:21 am

Hi

I want to make quite a few halloween props , a bunch of sledge hammers and also hands . What would be the most cost effective products you have to use for the process of casting and the mold .

Im making quite a lot so the mold needs to stand up to repeated casts .

Thanx for your time and get site

Hi,
I would use a silicone mould using CraftSil and cast a self skinning polyurethane foam into this mould. There are several densities of foam you can use, you would probably need one of the hardest. I would also use a wax release followed by PVA mould release to ensure you get a good release from the mould as polyurethane sticks to almost everything except silicone and to begin with I would take no chances. Get in touch if you need more help. Stan

Hi, It is hard to guess how much silicone you would need I would start of with 1kg and see how you go. The Foam has a maximum density of 200 however I would use 100R-Foam to start with as this is usually strong enough for most projects. Foam can also have a resin such as Craft Cast painted on the ourside to make it very hard to the touch if required. R-Foam is $55.00 2kg the smallest pack available. All the best Stan
