Tortoise Shell

Postby Hippety Hop on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:26 pm

Hi. I'm so new that I don't even have any resin or moulds or nothin.

Seen some stuff at the local hobby/craft shop.

I've made a few small instruments. Ukuleles in particular. These are the tuning keys I use.

I like this amber colour or the white pearl, but would really like to be able to purchase some tortoise shell coloured knobs, but they are just not available. It would be nice to have knobs that match the binding around the instrument.

The knob sits on a 5mm diameter post which has two flat sides that are 3.5mm across, and the top screw goes into it. The post goes to about 5 mm from the top of the knob.

Can anyone offer me some clues. I haven't got any. Don't know anyone with a pet tortoise either.

Cheers Hip.

re knobs

If you have one of these knobs it would be easy to duplicate with a silicone mould. If not it looks easy enought to make a duplicate out of a polymer clay like Kato harden it in an oven and then make a press mould with silicone putty either a one part mould with a flat backed mould or a two part mould for a 3D knob. You then cast Craft Cast resin into it coloured like tortiseshell sets up in 3 minutes. There is a book available on casting knobs if you ring 02/9533 9555 Sells for $15.95 plus postage Stan Alderson
